THE MOBILITY REVOLUTION

222 new trains for Lombardy

NEW TRAINS, NEW JOURNEYS

Caravaggio, Donizetti, Colleoni: three figures who left their mark in history. But also the names of three different types of trains, which are changing the face of rail service in Lombardy, the most mobile region in Italy.

There are 222 trains purchased by FNM Group and Ferrovienord for Trenord, against an investment of 2 billion euros by the Lombardy Region: 131 high-capacity Caravaggios, 61 medium-capacity Donizettis, 30 diesel-electric Colleonis for non-electrified lines. In fact, a first order of 176 convoys was joined by a second one for 46 additional vehicles, purchased in anticipation of the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics, an event that will put Lombardy at the centre of the world's attention.

A renewal programme that began in February 2020 with the first Caravaggio on the S11 Rho-Milan-Como-Chiasso line and will be completed by 2025.

The new fleet

131 Caravaggio, high-capacity double-decker trainsets made by Hitachi; 61 Donizetti single-decker medium-capacity trainsets made by Alstom; 30 Colleoni with diesel-electric engines made by Stadler for non-electrified lines-these are the trains that will bring more comfort, more punctuality and more sustainability to Lombardy's railways.

68 trains are in already service: 48 Caravaggios, 19 Donizettis, 1 Colleoni.
