Rules for using STIBM integrated tickets
STIBM integrated tickets are valid on trains, metro and surface transport in the provinces of Milan and Monza e Brianza. They allow you to combine multiple means of transport with a single ticket, provided you validate at every change. On this page you will find all the rules on travel classes, validation, intermediate stops, fare extensions and refunds.
Travel Classes and Available Services
On rail services, STIBM tickets are valid in second class only, both on Trenord services and on Trenitalia services operating regional transport within the validity area of the integrated fare system.
Travellers who wish to travel in first class can purchase a First Class Supplement, valid in combination with ordinary, daily, three-day and season STIBM tickets, for any zone radius up to MI9. The supplement is available in three options:
- First Class Supplement for occasional travel: €1.60
- Monthly First Class Supplement: €30.00
- Annual STIBM First Class Supplement: €300.00
First Class Supplements are valid on all Trenord and Trenitalia services within the Lombardy regional fare area and allow unlimited journeys during the validity period of the accompanying ticket. For ordinary and daily tickets, the supplement is valid until the last train of the validation day, even if beyond midnight. When combined with three-day tickets, three separate First Class Supplements must be purchased.
The Malpensa Express airport service is accessible with an STIBM ticket exclusively within the urban area of Milan (excluding the 21 first-ring municipalities) and on the extra-urban second class route Milan–Rescaldina (MI1–MI7), on trains to/from Milano Centrale only.
Validation and Changing Transport
Travellers holding an STIBM ticket must validate before the start of the journey and at every change of transport. A traveller without a valid stamp is considered to be travelling without a ticket and will be penalised according to the rules of the carrier that detects the irregularity.
Where to Validate for the First Time
-
Train: before boarding, in accordance with the current General Conditions of Transport
-
Metro: at the access turnstiles
-
Surface transport: on board the vehicle
Validation must be repeated when boarding each subsequent means of transport, except when transferring between two rail services: in that case, it is sufficient to validate before boarding the first train.
The last validation must be carried out before the ticket's validity expires and the journey must be completed within that time limit.
The STIBM integrated ticket must be kept throughout the journey and within station or stop areas accessed through turnstiles, and must be shown to inspection staff upon request at any point during the journey, including at stops when alighting.
STIBM tickets are non-transferable once validated.
Intermediate stops
With an STIBM ticket, travellers may use multiple routes and combine different means of transport, either continuously or with intermediate stops, within the time and area limits of the purchased ticket. Intermediate stops are permitted exclusively at stations located within the STIBM area.
The following extra-STIBM locations are exceptions, where an intermediate stop is permitted solely for the purpose of transferring to another rail or road service:

Fare extensions and journey prolungation
Within the STIBM area, fare extensions are available, currently exclusively through the ATM sales network and only for urban season tickets loaded on an ATM card. Work is underway to extend availability to the Trenord sales network as well.
For example: a traveller holding a monthly urban season ticket MI1–MI3a may request a fare extension for Locate Triulzi (MI3–MI4).
Journey prolongation tickets and connection tickets are not available for STIBM ticket holders.
Refunds and Bonuses
STIBM tickets are refundable in accordance with the current Trenord General Conditions of Transport. STIBM season tickets are not subject to bonuses.
