How to get there
It is possible to reach LECCO using the trains of the Milan-Monza-Lecco-Tirano, Lecco-Bergamo, Lecco-Colico-Sondrio, Lecco-Molteno-Como, S7 Milan-Monza-Molteno-Lecco or S8 Milan-Carnate-Lecco lines.
Tour of the capital: Lecco
Lecco lies in a basin bordered by Lake Como to the west and the Prealps to the east, surrounded by majestic mountains and with the crests of Mount Resegone as a crown. Following national unity, this city became one of the first industrial centres in Italy thanks to the development of the iron and steel industries. For this reason, it is known as the 'city of iron'. Lecco is also known for being the place where the writer Alessandro Manzoni set 'I Promessi Sposi', the most famous and widely read novel in the Italian language.
What to see: an essentially modern city, it has more than one interesting monument, both ancient, like Torre Viscontea and Ponte Azzone Visconti (built between 1336 and 1339), and recent, like the buildings of Mario Cereghini, Mino Fiocchi and Renzo Piano ('Meridiana' shopping centre).
Nature tour: Sentiero del Viandante (the Wayfarer's Trail) [Abbandia, Lierna, Varenna, Bellano, Dervio, Colico]
Though today it is possible to go from one municipality to another on the eastern shore of the Lario by train, travellers of yesteryear could only travel on foot. Modern 'wayfarers' will be able to use the train to reach the points of the Sentiero del Viandante, an ancient passage which, next to the lake road, bears witness to the role of the Lake Como territory in commercial traffic. The trail climbs from Abbadia Lariana halfway up the hillside outside and inside the villages, and retraces their history until it reaches Colico, before entering Valtellina or Valchiavenna. It has a total length of about 45 km, so it has to be covered in stages (depending on your fitness level, the route can be divided into 3 or 4 stages). Thanks to the frequent intersections between the trail and the Lecco-Colico railway line, it is possible to cross one stage at a time, returning by train to the starting point.
Cultural tour: the writers [Lecco, Bellano, Piona]
The province of Lecco has a very close link to some of the most famous figures in the history of Italian literature, from Alessandro Manzoni to Andrea Vitali. Pages and pages, poems and odes and novels and stories have recounted the blue and tranquil lake, making it immortal and well-known throughout the world. From the 18th century to the present day, we find Lake Como in the stories of great poets and writers who found inspiration for their works right here.
Historical tour: the fortifications [Lecco, Mandello, Varenna, Dervio, Colico]
On the eastern shore of Lake Como there used to be numerous fortifications, protecting a border territory. Some were erected near the lake shore with the aim of defending the population from assailants coming by water, whilst others were located on the slopes of the mountains, generally in places difficult to access and with wide visibility over the territories below.
Some recommended fortifications: Torre Viscontea (Lecco), Torre di Maggiana (Mandello), Castello di Vezio (Varenna), Torre di Orezia (Dervio), Fuentes (Colico).
