TRAVEL BETWEEN LOMBARDIA AND CANTON TICINO WITH JUST ONE TICKET

The new ticket and cross-border passes permit travel between Lombardia and Canton Ticino using just one travel ticket.

Lombardia has launched its regional train (R) and suburban Trenord Trains (S).

In Canton Ticino, the same travel tickets are valid on all trains belonging to the CTA, within the zones crossed to reach the destination/departure station.

Validity

Single Ticket: This ticket is only valid for the outward journey and only on the date of travel from Italy to Switzerland. The Italian pass is based on mileage and the Swiss pass is based on the number of zones crossed during the journey. The duration of the journey is normally indicated on the ticket.

Exemple
Duration of a cross-border ticket from Varese to Mendrisio:

  • Distance from Varese to Gaggiolo (Italian border) = 11km
  • Number of zones from the border to Mendrisio = 2 zones (150/140)
  • Duration of the ticket = 2 hours (11km) + 2 hours (2 zones) = 4 hours for the entire journey

Passes: Only available as a monthly pass, valid from the first day of the month if issued by Trenord, and valid for 30 days if issued by CTA. In Switzerland, it is possible to use all means of transport to/from the Arcobaleno area.
